on forgiveness



Why is it so difficult for us to forgive others?
Why do we find it so hard to let go?

Sometimes, even years after a certain incident;
sometimes, even after they have apologised;
sometimes, when they have hurt you unknowingly
and have no idea that you are struggling to forgive them.

Why?

Because we are usually under the misconception
that we will be doing them a favor by forgiving them.

That in fact, is not the case.

When we forgive someone, we actually do ourselves huge favor because through forgiveness; we release all the negative thoughts, emotions and energies that we are so desperately holding onto in our anger. Replaying the moment again and again in our mind, torturing ourselves in so many ways. It hurts us more than them, when we don't forgive.

We find it hard to forgive because we think we are in the more powerful position when we hold back forgiveness. Actually we are the weak ones, if that's the kind of power we rely on to give us strength. We are also not able to forgive because we take everything so personally.

Not everything another person does is done with the concious intention of hurting you. Sometimes they are just trying to protect themselves and that's the best they know how to protect themselves. Haven't you heard of the saying 'The Best Defence is Offense'? We need to give allowance to others for their insecurities and their imperfections without taking things personally.

So even if you do it for the most selfish of reasons, go ahead and forgive.

First, forgive yourself for holding onto the grudge for as long as you did.

Then, forgive the other person.

Finally, be proud of yourself.

Forgiveness in Islam: We need both Allah's and human forgiveness. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala is the most Forgiving of all. There are many names of Allah given in the Qur’an and some of these names are related to His mercy and forgiveness. For instance, Al-Ghafoor: The most Forgiving, Al-Tawwab: The Acceptor of repentance, Al-Haleem: The Clement, Al-'Afuw: The Pardoner, Ar-Rahman and ar-Rahim: The most Merciful and Compassionate.

"That is so. And whoever has retaliated with the like of that which he was made to suffer, and then has again been wronged, Allah will surely help him. Verily! Allah indeed is Oft-Pardoning, Oft-Forgiving." (Al-hajj, 22:60)

“The reward of the evil is the evil thereof, but whosoever forgives and makes amends, his reward is upon Allah.” (al-Shura, 42:40)

Here's a very beautiful hadith on forgiveness in Islam:

On the authority of Anas, who said: I heard the messenger of Allah say: Allah the Almighty has said: “O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as its.”

We need to remember that Allah only forgives His sincere servants who turn to Him in repentance. Allah will always help us insyaAllah.

~Let's use Syawal to start a new life!

RAMADHAN is over. The blessed month, which is full of spiritual and physical benefits, has left us and no one knows whether we will be able to meet the next Ramadhan — the month that will again offer us a period of fasting, reflection, devotion, generosity and sacrifice.

Now, we are in the month of Syawal, which is the time to celebrate victory against negative values and apparently, the true meaning of victory lies inside our heart. No one can change us but we ourselves. Let's make this Syawal as the beginning of our new life, as transforming ourselves into a new person would be a great victory.

Do we really get the victory? Do we really pass all of the tests during the fasting month that we deserve a chance to celebrate the victory? Fasting develops self-control and helps us to overcome selfishness, greed, laziness and other faults. Fasting teaches us to control the love for comfort. Consequently, the feelings and lessons we experience during Ramadhan should stay with us throughout the year. Fasting has made us to feel the quality of piety and devotion during Ramadhan. So, now, are we ready to strive to make the feelings and attitude stay with us during our "normal" lives? Because, this is the true goal and test of Ramadhan, anyway.

It is also in this context that we need to seriously, sincerely and appropriately appreciate and strive to adopt the call by imams nationwide during the Aidil Fitri morning prayers. Imams throughout the country urged Muslims to remain patient and draw strength from their faith in Allah (SWT) in times of calamity and cleanse the habit of wasting as it could cause hardship to the individual and those around him.

The imam also emphasised the power of patience, perseverance and keredhaan (submission to the will of Allah) in the face of any calamity as they are seen as acts of Allah (SWT). "Instead of being angry or expressing despair at unfortunate turns of events, one should readily accept them (as Qada and Qadar of Allah SWT), because Allah (SWT) loves those who exercise patience in their everyday life."

The congregation was also advised to spend wisely and stop the habit of wasting as it would lead to the accumulation of debts leading to a Muslim individual falling into poverty. This, ultimately, would affect the amal ibadah (the deeds and acts of worship) of the individual.

Hopefully, we have managed to gain victory over all the challenges throughout Ramadhan and while we celebrate the victory throughout Syawal, let us engage in introspection. Let's do self-examination on our achievement in the fasting month. Did we really managed to purify our souls and set our thinking right? Did fasting really strengthened not only our bodies but also our spirits?

May Allah accept our fasting, forgive our sins, and guide us all to the Straight Path. May Allah bless us all throughout the year, with His forgiveness, mercy, and peace, and bring us all closer to Him and to each other. May Allah give us the chance to meet, enjoy and gain all the benefits of the next Ramadhan. Amin

Today, upon a bus,
I saw a girl with golden hair.
And wished I was as fair.
When suddenly she rose to leave,
I saw her hobble down the aisle.
She had one leg and wore a crutch.
But as she passed, she smiled.

The Humble Plant

The soft morning wind breeze over the evergreen field and kiss my cheeks gently. The soothing sunray mildly diffuse to the atmosphere. Warm and calm.

I hear a short high-pitched sound coming from the chirping birds in the bushes. Chittering and twittering, showing pleasure and joy to each other welcoming the sun of the day.

I heard a continuous low, murmuring sound of babbling water at one side of the field. Crystal clear water running down the stream and the fish are dancing along imitating the water rhyme. Look natural. Sound natural. Very natural.

As I step on the brilliant green colour of the grass, my eyes are rendered to tiny little semalu that horizontally crept on the grass. Wild and scattered. With tender purple, sphere-like, furry flowers and thorny stems. Ugly. Unappealing. Intensely hurt when the thorns sting on feet.

I remember the time when my dad which I called ayah took me to this place. Long time ago when I was only five. Walking hands in hands with dad was a great time. When I first saw this plant on earth, I asked dad, “What is this plant, ayah?” “This is semalu, darling. The humble plant. When you touch it, it will close itself. It’s very shy, not letting anyone to pick it up” he replied with a smile. I love ayah very much.

Suddenly, “Oouucccchhhhh!!!!!!” I stepped on those thorny semalu. Red blood oozed out from my feet. Tears streamed down and flooded my face. “I hate semalu!!! Why do such plants do exist on the world??!!! It’s painful!” I shouted. My dad bent his head, rubbed my shoulders, kissed my cheek and said, “No honey, you must learn from this semalu to be a good girl.” I puzzled, “How? I’m a girl, not a plant.” “Yes honey, this little and humble plant is full of qualities that you can learn in your life. You will realise it one day, girl” expressed dad while his hand carefully covered my wound with his handkerchief.

“Whewwww...” The wind blows my scarf roughly and transported me back to the present. Now I understand my dad’s words. A plant which taught me to be what I am today. Be like semalu; closed when touched, shyness is not a shame. Shyness is pride. Be like semalu; thorns for protection, strength to defend badness. Be like semalu; good roots and not easily blown away by the wind. Strict to own principles and not easily influenced by people.

Time passed by very quickly and now I am no longer a child. Turning to be a young lady and becoming an adult. I had grown up with all of these qualities. Many things had change and one thing that still remains is; I am a girl. A girl who learned to be a woman by appreciating a humble plant called semalu.
